Previous Internship Program Participant Testimonial:

“Not only has this internship improved my professional skills, but I found a passion for educational issues that I wasn’t aware I possessed. During my first two weeks at MACAE, I had met the organization’s board members, done general office duties, attended House and Senate hearings on important education bills and been given huge responsibilities regarding the MACAE newsletter, because that aspect of MACAE matched my career goals. Within a month, I had established source relationships with professionals throughout the state. This internship has helped me develop into a professional young woman, ready to enter the workforce. When I began, I still hoped to work as a copy editor after graduation. Within two weeks, my mind was set on finding a job in education. Without this internship, I wouldn’t have discovered a whole new world of possibilities that would bring out the fire within me. Research and Motivate for the MOA and MOPAC! $

MICHIGAN OSTEOPATHIC ASSOCIATION (MOA)

The MOA is the professional association of the osteopathic profession in Michigan. MOA is the largest state osteopathic association in the country with approximately 5,400 members. We work very closely with the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). We are involved in helping our members in many areas but for this position the focus will be in the public relations, public policy and political arenas. The MOA is seeking an intern to work 80 hours over the Fall Semester. This internship can be done for school credit and a stipend of $800 will be paid at the end of the assignment. This internship will allow the successful candidate to work independently assisting the MOA in marketing and growing its political action committee, MOPAC. We would prefer a student with a car as an occasional trip to our office in Okemos may be required.

Typical duties will involve research about campaign and political action committee donations as reported to the MI Secretary of State. Research on political news of interest to physicians will also be required. Taking the research results and then turning that information into emails and other materials that will motivate more osteopathic physicians to contribute to MOPAC. This is a bi-partisan position and what we want is someone who can help us drive more of our members to become active contributors to MOPAC. The current economic conditions in Michigan have taken a toll on our contributions and we need to build up our balance for the 2010 election year campaigns.

Interested applicants should submit a resume, 2 writing samples and an explanation of why they would be the perfect person for this position to:

Tips for your internship

The success of your internship will depend largely on how you approach it.

Here are some tips:

Be prepared.

Read up on the company before you get there. Know something about the advertiser's products and markets or the agency's clients and whatever else is critical to your employer's growth and profitability. Talk to anyone who has done an internship at the company before. One clever idea is to write your "What I learned this summer" report before you start the job, and make sure you do learn all that you hope to learn.

Don't wait for work to be assigned.

When you arrive on the job, find out what needs to be done and volunteer to do it. Don't be a nuisance. But don't be a wallflower, either. Ask questions. Ask to be included in meetings. (If you are invited to attend meetings be sure to ask what attire is appropriate, in advance.) Get to know the professionals around you. Learn what they do. Help all you can.

Don't get discouraged.

If there's dumb work to be done, do it with a smile, quickly and well. Be interested in everyone. Even in the worst situation, there's a lesson: "How to do things better someday when it's your turn."

Write objectives.

What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to learn? Write out your objectives. Share them with the employer’s internship site coordinators when you interview. It is best to get your aspirations up front. Your site coordinator will respect that forthrightness.

Bang the Drum! The Publicdrum!

We are launching a series of community calendars as part of our development of a more efficient way to distribute event data. One is geographically focused on the Greater Lansing area and the other is topic centered and will be created in cooperation with Artserve Michigan.

We are looking for someone to work with individual organizations - many of them very small - to help them understand and participate in community calendaring. The candidate would initially transcribe the organization's events into our web form and assist them in using our automated calendars, widgets and community calendar tools.

The initiative has two objectives; introduce the concept to target users and facilitate participation, and to help us understand and rectify any problems in our services or presentation - or suggest features we should offer.

Great Opportunity in Troy! FILLED 5.23.09

Located in Troy, MI we have just launched a product called Zip-It Steak Sauce. There are 5 flavors, and we have been honored with some recent awards in the industry. While we are only 8 months old, we already have it placed in over 3000 grocery stores nationwide (including Kroger, Publix, etc). We have done some PR on our own..sending samples out to food magazines, food editors in newspapers, TV stations and shows, etc, but could really use some help during the upcoming summer grilling season. We will be on Fox 2 News on May 8th...a Washington Post article at the end of May...a new food magazine's next edition, etc. I think it would be a great opportunity for someone.

My background is in advertising--I have been a Creative Director for agencies like Leo Burnett, McCann Erickson, DDB Needham, and Doner Advertising...and would make a good mentor.
